The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is proud to award well over $3 million in scholarships to our students each year. Thanks to the generous donations of businesses, organizations and individual families, we offer a wide variety of awards to suit our students’ varying needs.

The Borlaug-Thomson Internship is one of the most prestigious awards offered to undergraduate students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

This internship is designed to support the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation (NBHF) and the historic Borlaug Farms in promoting the legacy of Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug.  The program is supported by generous benefactors from Cresco, Iowa: The Thomson family, and the Kramer family.

The internship will provide opportunities for an individual to be involved in public education and curriculum development, communications, landscape design/management and other related tasks. The intern will devote approximately 70% of their time to the NBHF. The intern is required to represent the NBHF at the Howard County Fair, June 21-25, 2023. The intern will also assist the Howard County - ISU Extension office with various tasks including preparation for the Howard County Fair and preparations for the Norman Borlaug Harvest Fest the last weekend in August (August 25-27, 2023) The intern will devote approximately 30% of their time to serving the ISU Extension office. The intern is expected to live in or near the town of Cresco during the internship. The intern is expected to complete a report within one month of the completion of the internship. The intern is also expected to participate in the INSPIRE DAY at the Borlaug Farm on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Duration: 10 weeks during the summer. By March 1, 2023 the intern will select the dates of the summer internship and communicate them to all parties in Cresco and ISU.

Eligibility: For an undergraduate student with their primary major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing at the time of application. Must be enrolled during the fall semester following the internship.

Value: Total value of the Borlaug-Thomson Internship is potentially more than $9,000. The award/internship is calculated as follows:

  • $6,000 based on working for $15/hr x 8 hours/day x 5 days/week x 10 weeks
  • $3,000 scholarship applied to ISU tuition
  • up to $1,000 reimbursed for actual housing costs in Cresco.

The Edgar Timm Endowed Memorial Scholarship was endowed by family and friends of Edgar Timm, who was Iowa State University's first Rhodes Scholar.  Edgar Timm received his B.S. in chemical technology in 1936 from ISU and was appointed as full-time research assistant on a Rockefeller Foundation project.

Jere Wise was raised on a 160 acre farm near Newton, Iowa. He majored in Agronomy and credits a portion of his success to college and fraternity activities. Jere was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity, a member of Cardinal Key and was Class President. His career started with the plant food industry and later moved to crop protection chemicals. He acquired Kalo, Inc. a manufacturer of agricultural and turf specialties (www.kalo.com). Jere and Sue Wise now reside in Naples FL. They created this scholarship to help young people have an opportunity to get an education and participate fully in leadership-related activities while in college. They intend to provide scholarships for deserving US citizens who are enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University and fit the criteria as defined. The scholarship, initiated by Roger and Connie Underwood in recognition of Dr. Bob Jolly's dedications, unselfish leadership and stewardship of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Program, provides an award to a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences student who demonstrates a commitment to and aptitude for entrepreneurship.

The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a recipient at a junior or senior standing and pursuing a major offered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at time of application. The recipient will demonstrate an interest/aptitude for entrepreneurship, as determined by the director. Examples include but are not limited to: participation in the programs of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative; experience starting a business or non-profit organization; internship with an entrepreneurial business; relevant course work; etc.

Merit-based scholarships for qualified agricultural students regardless of
where they plan to study. Eligible applicants include undergraduate
students already enrolled in college as well as high school seniors accepted for enrollment at an accredited college, university or community college in a course of study related to agriculture. Awards are for a minimum of $1,000 and may be renewed annually for up to four years, provided certain conditions are met. Candidates must apply by March 31.

The National Corn Growers Association and BASF Corporation have teamed up to provide a new scholarship for ag students.

The NCGA Academic Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship Program awards five (5) $1,000 one-year scholarships to deserving, qualified second-year undergraduate students (or later) or graduate students enrolled in an agriculture, agribusiness, or ag vocation program at a 2-year or 4-year program of study at an accredited junior college, college or university.

Applicants must be members or dependents of a member of the National Corn Growers Association. Employees and the families of employees of any division of BASF or their subsidiaries are not eligible for the scholarship.

The John and Mary Pappajohn Scholarship Fund was created through a generous gift from John and Mary Pappajohn. Since 2000, $10,000 in scholarship money has been made available to Iowa State University students demonstrating an interest in entrepreneurship. At $1,000 each, these honors are targeted to students of Junior, Senior, or Graduate status who have started or who intend to establish their own businesses or are participating in the entrepreneurship program.
